Dining out in Kalimalang is as exciting as the arrival of the postman bearing your latest electric-water bills. To titillate the palate, a trip to Jakarta specifically to the buffet spread of Ritz-Carlton Jakarta is an absolute necessity. Tucking into its smorgasbord of food offerings is a beautiful respite from the banal taste of Pizza Hut pasta and pseudo-Japanese food of Hoka Hoka Bento.

Selamat minikmati! Tuck into plates of flavour

It’s not just a treat for the palate that has long endured the humdrum cuisine of Kalimalang, it’s also a test of culinary etiquette. Eating at a buffet isn’t about piling your plate mountain high with food. It’s all about taking tucking in at your degustation version of the myriad food spread before you. One must savour the flavour thus quantity plays second fiddle to quality. And so after digging into the broccoli-chicken salad, a bite of the Peking duck drizzled with plum sauce is enough to tickle the palate and so you move on to savouring the freshness of the maguro, tai and salmon sashimi dipped in Kikkoman at Asia Restaurant.

Saturdays at Asia for this time is a showcase of hawker food, food that Singaporeans and expats crave for from the ubiquitous hawker centres dotting the Garden City. Joining the roster of international culinary delights at Asia were the oyster egg, carrot cake, bakuh teh, chilli crab, hokkien mee, congee, nasi goreng, kwetiau with soup and many more.

Chocolate fudgy delights for a sweet ending

Naturally, a meal isn’t a meal without a sweet coup de grace. It was a blessing being seated near the dessert station because it was a hop, skip, and jump from our table to the chocolate fondue fountain, white chocolate panacotta, chocolate fudge, blueberry cheesecake, ice cream (a little melted for my satisfaction though), fruits and many more. Nothing rounds off the goodness of a buffet than a well-stocked dessert station – you just keep going back for more.
