They make a great pick-me-up and they always do the trick. It’s not just the sugar rush – sliding your fork down a slice of cake that is far from palatable will only add to the accumulated frustration of the day. It’s the whole ambience of being in a café like Coffee Bean & Tea Leaf. I’ve always liked the café and, despite the sometimes grumpy crew, always leave feeling like the light coat of ice melting from the first ray of the sun. With my favourite cup of piping hot genmaicha (that particular Japanese green tea that has roasted rice grains), the creamy tiramisu and soft red velvet cake from Coffee Bean & Tea Leaf never fails to shoo away the stresses of an awful working day, the parade of bitter memories of the past and news of your crush and his new girlfriend who doesn’t really measure up to your grade.
